The Girls’ Cross Country team has had an incredible season so far, with exciting developments and impressive performances. Vanca Pandey, a standout member of the team (“She’s a star,” says Ali Zimmerman, our head editor), let us interview her. For those of us who are out of the loop, “this year, the girls’ cross-country team started off strong by winning our home meet.” Vanca emphasized how special this victory was, not just for the win itself, but for the team spirit: “We had more than just a full team, with many of my friends coming out to support and run alongside me.
Many of them continued to join us at other meets throughout the season.” One of the most memorable events was the Troy Twilight Invitational. “We gathered a large group of seniors, juniors, and sophomores to run at this big meet – We never have that many people competing in our races,” Vanca shared, “It was a really good bonding experience for everyone who was there.” The team also tackled the Seven Hills Invitational, known for its challenging course. “All of the girls performed extremely well and completed the course strongly,” she said proudly. When asked about her personal goals, Vanca didn’t hold back: “This year, I am really hoping to make it to state,” she said. She’s also aiming to break the school record and run a sub-19:00 5K—an ambitious and inspiring target. “Even if I don’t achieve them this year, I know I can still reach them,” she added with determination. Vanca offered heartfelt advice for anyone considering joining the team:
“For anyone interested in joining cross country, I know that running long distance can seem intimidating—and it is definitely hard—but it’s so rewarding. Seeing the results of the work you put in is the best feeling. Pushing yourself every day builds strong mental discipline that applies outside of the sport.”
She also highlighted the social aspect: “Running is especially fun when you have friends with you, which is something I got to experience this year. I’ve had so much fun this season and I have so much love for the sport right now.”
As for time management, Vanca reassured potential runners: “Cross country isn’t very hard to manage with the school schedule. Meets are normally on Saturday mornings, and you’re usually done before 11 AM, so you get a productive start to your weekend.”
Vanca and the Girls’ Cross Country team are going strong, and we can’t wait to see what they accomplish next. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just curious, her story is a powerful reminder of the joy and growth that comes from pushing your limits with friends by your side.
