Fall is the season when Oscar buzz begins to make itself heard in the movie world. When certain films receive high praise, the rumors begin to circulate and speculation grows on which films will get nominated and ultimately win the Oscars. This fall, films such as Captain Phillips have received much praise from movie critics. But yet there is one film that has received the greatest amount of positive attention from movie goers. The movie Gravity, is one that people just can’t seem to stop talking about. This Sci-Fi thriller has won numerous film accolades and currently holds a 97% average rating on “Rotten Tomatoes”. It has been able to hold its own at the top of the box office against the films that have come out the last few weeks. While I have always been a fan of science fiction films, does this film truly live up to the hype it has received? I had to find out myself, so I went to see it a couple of weeks ago.
To my pleasant surprise I was happy to realize that the film doesn’t just live up to the hype, it in fact far exceeds it. It consists of a unique plot, two major superstars (Sandra Bullock and George Clooney), and brilliant cinematography, that makes it seem like you’re almost there. The story is about two astronauts who become detached from their space shuttle after it is hit by some debris. Relying only on a low supply of oxygen, and fate they struggle to find a way to return to Earth. Throughout the film there are various, nerve-wracking challenges that these characters must face. You will be joyful during the happy moments and terrified during the scary ones.
While the film is almost perfect, there are a few things that could have been done better. There were a few times where the film would lag. The adventures and challenges seemed endless. But they had you on edge the whole time. It was sad to see George Clooney’s role turn out to be shorter than expected. Whether you are in search of the perfect way to spend a Saturday night with some friends or in search of the ideal sci-fi movie, Gravity is the perfect film for you. Sci-fi fan or not you will be completely entertained!
