Mrs. Jamie Back, an Upper School teacher, is always informing US students of fantastic STEM opportunities to strengthen their minds and hone their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills. These opportunities are often presented during Keeler assemblies throughout the year. I wanted to write a few options down for the entire CCD community. Be sure to ask Mrs. Back for more information/opportunities as the year continues!
On November 11th, the University of Dayton will be hosting Explore Engineering. This event will teach students about engineering careers, and what having an engineering degree at UD is like. Participants will tour the campus, meet teachers and students, and participate in hands-on lab activities. This is open to high school juniors and seniors and their families. This online challenge, the Veterans Appreciation Challenge, requires entries to be due by December 15th. Fourth through twelfth grade students who are legal residents of the United States are tasked with creating a model of a 3-D wearable pin. Winners of this challenge will have their designs 3-D printed and distributed to US veterans at the National Veterans Memorial Museum in Columbus. Lastly, if you simply want to look further into STEM, check out the Ohio STEM Learning Network. They help with professional development, classroom activities, and have award opportunities all relating to STEM. At the bottom of their webpage, they have a news section that mentions many things relevant to schools in STEM. In December, (found under the events tab on their website) they have online Q&A sessions for those wishing to look further into a STEM career experience. URL: Ohio STEM Learning Network (osln.org)
As previously mentioned, more opportunities come out as the year goes on, so keep your eyes and ears open. Contact Mrs. Back if you have any questions, or don’t know how to get started. Please take advantage of these opportunities if you have any interest!
