September marks Suicide Prevention Month and it is a crucial time to raise awareness about the growing issue of suicide and the importance of mental health. The month is dedicated to educating people about suicide warning signs, promoting open conversations around mental health, and encouraging those who are struggling to seek help. It also serves as a time to honor those who have lost their lives to suicide and support survivors. Suicide Prevention Month emphasizes the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness and fostering a community of care, understanding, and compassion.
Common warning signs of suicide include:
1. Talking about wanting to die or harm oneself.
2. Expressing feelings of hopelessness or having no reason to live.
3. Increased withdrawal from friends, family, or activities.
4. Extreme mood swings or changes in behavior.
5. Giving away possessions or saying goodbye.
6. Increased use of alcohol or drugs.
7. Feeling trapped, like there’s no way out.
8. Engaging in risky or reckless behavior.
9. Showing signs of severe anxiety or agitation.
10. Sudden calmness after a period of depression.
