The Golden Globes are notorious for two things: its unscripted nature and free-flowing alcohol. As one would assume, these two things together can lead to several mishaps. But the Golden Globes wouldn’t be what they are without a few little bumps in the road. The 2017 Golden Globes were no different. Below I chose some of the worst moments of the this year’s Globes and some of the best. I suggest watching the videos!
Worst:
- Jimmy Fallon’s teleprompter doesn’t work at the beginning of the show, forcing him to scrap his monologue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAMyrDV3bpw
- The Sofia Vegara joke about how English isn’t her first language. In short, she was supposed to say annual but instead said anal, anus, etc. It was a dumb joke and left the audience and viewers uncomfortable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVTeNXkekGw
- Nobody at the Globes seemed to get the memo that Hidden Figures and Fences are not the same movie. Multiple times throughout the evening Hidden Figures was mistakenly called Hidden Fences. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw4D867Ku78
- Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn took to the stage as presenters, but their gag that Hawn was so drunk she couldn’t read the teleprompter fell flat.
- Casey Affleck winning (don’t even get me started, but if you know anything about the sexual harassment allegations, then that should be enough) **Bonus: Brie Larson’s unamused face https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIeKo6gYNFo
- La La Land ran away with too many awards. It won a record breaking 7, but in my opinion didn’t deserve 4 (Actor, Actress, Best Original Song, Screenplay) out of the 7 of them.
Best:
- The skewering speech Meryl Speech gave about Donald Trump after being awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxyGmyEby40
- The Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds tribute was classy, touching, and tear jerking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7ZHMamjXjY
- Diego Luna presenting the Golden Globe for Best Screen Play in Spanish and then asking “You got that right?”, after Sophia Vegara made the tasteless joke about her accent earlier in the evening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBF4mK_NrLg
- Moonlight won for the best drama. Let’s hope it can beat out La La Land at the Oscars.
- Dev Patel and his adorable mini counterpart Sunny Pawar introduce their movie Lion. It is the cutest thing you will see all year. Please– just watch it: https://twitter.com/goldenglobes/status/818279918291165185?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw
- Kristen Wiig and Steve Carell’s absolutely riotous turn as presenters for Best Animated Film left the audience in tears of laughter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_QQgz74qpo
