This year Cincinnati Country Day School had 46 award winners in the Regional Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. The award winning pieces are sent to the Cincinnati Arts Academy where all of the Upper School art and photography classes saw them last week. Although the awards are certainly prestigious, some question the ability of the judges to choose the objectively best works.
The highest award is the Gold Key, followed by the Silver Key and then the Honorable Mention. Gold Keys are sent on to be judged in New York, where students could end up winning a national medal.
Erica Glosby ’17, who won a Gold Key and three Silver Keys, says “I love creating art and seeing other people’s art but to be frank, I think the awards are flawed. It’s a cool experience and it’s great if you win something, but there was so much work by other people that I felt surpassed mine in quality, yet received little or nothing. Art is subjective and that’s just how it goes, surprisingly, I just got lucky.”
Although it is hard to say if the awards can be or are truly objective in their judgment, they still stand as one of the premier awards for young artists. Jack Tereck ’17 said that it was interesting seeing the works of all the artists at the CAA but wondered about how the judges made their choices. Despite the subjective judging, Country Day certainly performed well in comparison with other schools in Cincinnati. The full list of Country Day Award Winners is below:
