This year, the Cincinnati Country Day School boys’ varsity golf team is very young, with one senior, two juniors, four sophomores, and one freshman. The top six consist of two juniors and four sophomores. With a record of 3-7, the team has surpassed last year’s record of 1-9. The team’s average is 173 and on all seven losses, the team has shot over this average. This year, the team has had trouble with consistency. Capable of shooting an outstanding 154 on some days, the boys can be 19 strokes over average and shoot a 192 on others.
There is one more match before the MVC, Sectionals, and hopefully, District Tournaments. Starting on Thursday, September 24th, The MVC Tournament will begin. Teams to look out for are Seven Hills and CHCA. These two teams from the MVC Tournament will also have a good run at the State Tournament. To move out of sectionals, Country Day needs to place in the top four scores. According to Thomas Mactaggart, a second year varsity player: “There are not four teams in Sectionals who can beat us.” If the team can shoot their average, they have a very good chance of making it to the next round. The District Tournament, with better and more competitive teams, will require a score under the average, but nothing too incredible. Hunter Folan, a third year varsity player said, “We are capable of shooting low, we just need a quality day out of all of our players.” Even though the teams’ record is only 3-7 in regular season match play, they have placed 1st, 2nd, and 4th in three tournaments thus far. This is good news for the team because MVCs, Sectionals, and Districts are tournaments and not matches.
The varsity team has very good potential this year and will for years to come. Hopefully, they can bring home some wins by placing well during the last three tournaments of the year.
