Three weeks ago the Country Day swim team participated in the Ohio State High School Swim Championships. The Indians had five swimmers participating in the meet: Malcolm Doepke 16 swam in the 500 freestyle, Allie Wooden 15 swam in the 100 free, 200 free, 200 free-relay, and 400 free relay, Kira Hughes 15, Celia Macrae 15, and Holly Jacobs 17 swam in the 200 free-relay and 400 free-relay.
Doepke had an astounding swim in prelims by swimming a 4:50.41, finishing 14th and qualifying for finals. At finals, he swam a 4:50.74 where he finished 15th. Doepke dropped about half a second in between the Southwest District Championship at Miami University on February 14th and the State Championship the following week in Canton.
Wooden swam as fast as I have ever seen. In the 100 free, she swam a 51.32 in prelims and an impeccable 50.97 in finals to finish fourth in the state. Although she swam fast in the 100, she was eager to swim faster for the 200, and thats what she did. In prelims, she swam a 1:50.04 and a 1:49.21 for finals where she finished second in the state behind Mariemonts Claire Gilmore.
Both of the free relay teams improved greatly in between the District Championship and the State Championship. At Districts, the 200 relay swam a 1:40.71 to finish in fifth place; Wooden swam a 23.80, Jacobs swam a 25.91, Hughes swam a 25.77, and Macrae swam a 25.23. At State, the girls swam a combined 1:40.29; Wooden swam 23.52, Jacobs swam 26.32, Hughes swam 25.82
and Macrae swam 24.63. The girls came into the State swim meet seeded 14th and ended up finishing 12th.
As for the 400 relay, the girls finished sixth by swimming a 3:45.08 at Districts; Wooden swam 51.81, Jacobs swam 57.06, Hughes swam 58.46, and Macrae swam 57.75. At the State swim meet, the girls finished 11th with a time of 3:40.61, after being seeded 21st coming into the State Championship. With the girls picking up their fastest times, dropping an amazing 4.47 seconds off of their time between the District and State swim meets. The 200 and 400 free-relays posted their best times at the State Championship ultimately beating the Cincinnati Country Day School record for both.
Congratulations to the team on your great performances at the State
Championship!
