This past weekend Country Day students gathered on the stage of the Keeler Auditorium for Winter Formal, the high schools Sadie Hawkins dance. The theme was Beach Party, and according to social chair Austin Harden 14, the intention of choosing this theme was to provide students with a night
of relief from the arctic cold. A night of beach-iness in the middle of such a miserable winter was really nice, Harden explained. Students looked fashionable in their dresses and suits and colorful leis as they shook off their winter coats and entered the dance. The stage was transformed into a beach party thanks to the efforts of Student Council. An estimated 190 students attended the danceonly about 40 students less than at homecomingwhich was a record high for a CCDS Sadie Hawkins dance. The increase in attendance can be attributed to the persistent marketing techniques of Student Council President Patrick Wildman 14 and Social Chairs Anand Mehta 14 and Austin Harden.
The DJsstudents Danielle Mangat 15 and Aneesh Jain 14kept the party energized with their awesome music selection. Ali Wooden 15 explained that she liked the music because it was different from the other dances we had been toomore techno and more variety versus other dances where they played the same type of music over and over. Many students felt that having student DJs meant a more modern and relevant playlist. Lucas Mairal-Cruz 14 laughed as he recollected showing off [his] less-than-professional
dancing technique and lack of skills in a judgment free zone. Brian McSwiggens (14) highlight of the night was riding on Lucass shoulders during the song Dark Horse by Katy Perry. It was just nice being with friends in a
relaxed atmosphere for a change, Ali recalled.
Contributing to the evenings success were the teacher chaperones who generously volunteered their time to make sure students had the safest and most enjoyable Winter Formal possible.
The lights were really awesome and student council did a great job setting it up, Lucas concluded. Student Council agreed that the night was a success, and were pleased with the over $2,500 made through dance tickets that will be used for this years prom.
