For the last three years, high school students have had the opportunity to earn the right to wear sweaters and sweatshirts without a collared shirt underneath, once they have proved that they can adequately follow the dress code. This year, that will not be the case. Students will have to abide by the usual rules set out in the Student Handbook: “Collared shirts or turtlenecks must be worn beneath all outerwear.”
Mrs. Stephanie Luebbers, Head of the Upper School, along with the deans and the faculty, has made this decision in response to feedback from the other divisions and visitors to the school. Mrs. Luebbers explained that last school year, especially during the spring, students’ appearances became “way too sloppy” and the maintaining a respectable level of attire became “hard to enforce.” As the spirit of the dress code was no longer being respected, it became evident that the student body no longer deserved the special privilege.
However, there is hope. Although there is no possibility that high school-ers will earn back their right to going collar-free this year, Mrs. Luebbers made it clear that the rule will be “up for negotiation in future years”.
