Rebecca Miller, ’12, started writing in seventh grade after attending a camp at Women Writing for (a) Change, but even before then poems and stories were always “playing in [her] head.” She mainly writes free verse poetry; however, she also likes writing “little stories.” Her favorite writers include J. K. Rowling, Sarah Dessen, and Billy Collins. In college, she plans to pursue education as a major, perhaps with a minor in math or theater. Below, Rebecca shares one of her pieces called “Differences.”
Differences
If one were to take a survey of nature Camp
I would be the odd one out
sticking out like a sore thumb
a Midwestern Girl
in a sea of Southerners
but at Nature Camp,
they don’t treat me any differently than the next kid
unless they ask, they don’t know I’m not like them
and even if they do
they embrace it and me
they ask about the differences
and I tell them about where I live
about how the highest hills we have
are those made by man
and I tell them about living next to a polluted river
where nothing lives
and yet,
that is our claim to fame
and they laugh
and learn
and don’t care
