There is no doubt that the Upper School Student Council’s goal for the 2009-2010 school year is to bring the community together. Led by Student Council President Xanni Brown, ’10, Student Council has implemented the Tribal Pass to increase school spirit. Vice President Isaac Guttman, ’10, hopes the new initiative will “boost spirit by having a higher turnout for athletic events.” The Tribal Pass, which was recently introduced to the US, is a card with a list of fall sporting events. When a student attends one of the seven athletic home events listed on the card, a Council member will give the student a sticker. Upon collection of five stickers, the student is eligible to attend a free pizza party, sponsored by the Student Council. Also, any student that attends all seven games will receive “an amazing, huge school spirit prize,” according to Brown. “It’s a new idea to get better attendance for nontraditional sports, trying to get more people to come to games that aren’t just football and basketball,” commented Mr. Scott Dillingham, director of student and multicultural life and a health teacher at CCDS.
The Student Council’s new initiatives are not confined to the playing fields. According to Guttman, the Council hopes to lower dance ticket prices in an effort to encourage attendance. Also, “The social chairs this year have so much energy, they revitalize the student body. They’re going to make the dances the best they can be, with great ideas and other activities to do besides dancing,” said Guttman. The Homecoming Dance, the first of the year, will be on Oct. 10 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Miami Boat Club, continuing a location tradition at CCDS.
Mr. Dillingham praised the Student Council and said that the members have “several new and fresh ideas that they would like to implement this year, but they’re still in the working stages. They’re still brainstorming ideas and they really seem to be working hard on giving the student body new options and fun activities to participate in.” Guttman added that the Council is currently in “the process of planning some events that will be partly fundraiser but fun and enjoyable at the same time.” One idea that the Student Council is trying to put into action is an Upper School spelling bee with Mrs. Dunn as the host. Additionally, Brown exclaimed that during spirit week this year, “Everyone’s going to dress and the lunchtime inter-grade competitions are going to be fierce.”
“I think this year is going to amazing because of the student body’s enthusiasm and the Student Council’s focus and commitment,” said Brown.
