This years baseball season was much better than last years season. The Country Day varsity baseball team finished the season with a record of 11-10. The team proved that it can compete with the elite teams of the league, CHCA and Cincinnati Christian. Most recently Country Day played CHCA on Monday afternoon, April 29th. Going into the game, the team knew that CHCA was a formidable opponent.
CHCA started out strong, not allowing a run until the fourth inning. Country Day, on the other hand, started out slow, giving up six runs in four innings. Sophomore pitcher, Cameron Alldred, pitched well, but the
defense wasnt there to back him up, and neither was the offense. However, in the fourth inning, the bats came alive, and CCD scored three runs to cut the deficit to three. Newly motivated to win, the defense went out and posted a shutout inning. The top of the fifth inning rolled around, and Austin Richey ’15 started the inning off well with a single. Next, Cameron Alldred stepped into the batters box ready for a rally, but quickly went down in the count, 2-2. On the fifth pitch, Alldred smashed a ball to opposite field. He raced out of the batters box and easily made it to first. Rounding first and heading for second, he noticed the CHCA right fielder had missed the ball and was racing to get it. Running out of steam, Alldred pushed himself for one more base, and slid in safely into third. The Country Day bench jumped up and down cheering for Alldreds RBI triple. He later scored on a two out single, and the team narrowed the margin to a one point deficit, 6-5. After a two run fifth inning, CHCA came back to score two runs, making their lead 8-5. They put in their closing pitcher for the sixth and seventh inning which secured a victory for them and meant a loss for Country Day. Although the Indians lost, the team played a great game against one of the toughest opponents in the league.
Coming into the season, the baseball team that thought they were going to be pretty good, as every player
from last year was returning, with the exception of two seniors that graduated. But they didnt expect a big change. Not only did the team look and play much better this year than last year, statistically, the team performed much better. Last year the CCDS team finished 9-16 overall with a 3-11 record in the division. This year, they were 11-10 overall and 7-6 in the division. The team also scored the same number of runs as last year, getting 121 runs, and allowed fewer runs this year, allowing 83 runs, compared to 213 runs allowed last year. Coach Dunn commented on the pitching saying, We have had very good pitching from all four of our pitchers. This year all of the starting pitchers are ranked in the top 21 in the MVC; Alldred is ranked eighth, Richey is ranked 21st, Luke Hall ’13 is ranked 13th, and Austin Harden ’14 is ranked 19th. Last year only one of the pitchers, Richey, ranked in the top 20. Overall, this years Country Day varsity baseball team played extremely well, and will hopefully continue on this successful path for the next couple of years.
The Indians finished the season with a loss against Fayetteville on May 22nd, with a score of 3-1, in the Sectional Championship game. Even though the Indians lost the final game, it was nothing to hang their heads about. The team performed wonderfully throughout the entire season not only living up to, but exceeding the coaches expectations.
