Many students may have noticed the new WiFi routers on the walls in classrooms. These new routers were installed school wide over the summer. .
According to Director of Technology, Dr. Robert Baker, the routers were relatively easy to install: not many changes were required to the existing system, and there have only been a few small glitches with the system. The new routers use a new protocol called 802.11n that has increased the wireless speed significantly—to the point where being connected wirelessly rivals being connected to the internet by a cable.
The last time the system was updated was about four years ago, and Mr. Baker says that each system has lasted about four years. Country Day was the first school to install a WiFi system in 1999. The next expected update will also be in around four years, but after that, Mr. Baker says it is likely that WiFi will be replaced by cell service on our tablets. The technological future is certainly promising!
