A few weeks ago, the world turned its attention to the London 2012 Olympic Games. The staff of the Scroll were inspired to construct our own CCDS Olympics and answer the obvious questions: What are the events? Who are the heroes? Is there, walking in the hallways of the Upper School, a CCD Ryan Lochte or Gabby Douglas? We think there might be. Below are listed some of the events of CCD2012:
4×400 Sperry’s Relay: As the name suggests, this is a fast-paced event for both boys and girls with a twist– the baton is a pair of Sperry’s. This makes the race very complicated at the exchange because the shoes need to be removed and then passed off within a small window of time. However, for these contestants the feet are so used to the shape of the shoe, the competitors clock much faster time than you might expect. Avery Maier might be our Gabby for this event…
Marker Archery: Perhaps one of the most exciting events of CCD2012 is marker archery, where the boys and girls divisions both attempt to get as many of their markers to land on the ledge of the whiteboard as possible. Each competitor starts with ten markers and the gameplay advances until two are left standing to battle it out an a head-to-head competition that deserves to be broadcast on ESPN.
400m Given Road Speed: Students have so much practice in this event already that the competition is going to be stiff. The student who can reach the fastest speed on Given Road is the winner, but any competitors caught by the Indian Hill Rangers are disqualified.
Entrance Steps Long Jump: This event is unique in that it can be approached from two directions. Students can try for the more conventional jump down the steps, but daring competitors can attempt to jump up the steps if they wish. The rules are that the running start is no longer than ten feet and that your distance is measured at the first place your body
touches the step. This event also has the possibility of getting mildly violent during morning heats when competitors might accidentally attack an unaware freshman or middle schooler.
Synchronized Pen Flip: One of the less athletic events in CCD2012, the synchronized CCD pen flip is nevertheless an essential part of The Games. There is both a boys and girls division and the students compete in pairs that flip twenty times each. The most synchronized are crowned the champions and their title earns them money, fame and glory. Or at least glory. Sam Fossett is a clear contender for this event…
Parking Lot Marathon: This event is far more limited than the others of CCD2012 because only those who can drive (or whose siblings can drive) and arrive to school past 8:00AM are eligible. Those students line up for the bufu marathon: who can get from the back parking lot to their advisory the fastest? The competition is tough but the students are practiced– all signs point to an exciting event. Amelia and Lake Drew are the team to beat.
Chair Wrestling: In real Olympic wrestling, there are a lot of rules to follow about how you hold someone or how you can tackle them. Not so in CCD comfy library chair wrestling. The only rules are that you must not draw the attention of a teacher and that you must not injure your opponent. Beyond that, all bets are off in this cutthroat battle for the best armchairs in the school.
Cookie Wednesday 100m Sprint: It is exactly what it sounds like– a full on dash to get into the Dining Terrace and get the legal two cookies before they run out. This event does not give out medals because everyone who wins gets a cookie, but Mr. Brownstein is seen as the favorite anyway.
