Have you walked by the rock wall recently and noticed a growing vegetable garden next to several big concrete blocks? These concrete blocks will be the base of CCDSs Pizza Oven. Funded by the Environmental Council, the oven will be ready for use by next March.
The idea for the pizza oven can be attributed to Dr. Greg Martin, freshman English teacher and Academic Dean. He was inspired by a friend of his, who throws bring your own topping pizza
parties. It is a great community builder for all ages and a lot of fun. The Bread Builders, a book by Daniel Wing and Alan Scott, will be used as a model for the construction of the oven. Scotts model has been used all over the world.
The dissolution of Humanities was an incentive to build the oven. Humanities, a mix of English and History, focused on the formation of ancient cultures. A major theme of the course was agriculture. The course has now been separated into English 9 and History 9, but the Pizza Oven Project will be a unique link to the old Humanities, teaching students how communities came together to cook a meal.
The oven will also raise awareness of healthy eating and promote cooking. It will be used to make delicious homemade pizza for the entire school. Upper School students will be eligible to receive volunteer hours, both for helping to build the oven and even cooking the pizza.
Dr. Martin would like to use the oven to raise money for the school, possibly during Fall Fest next year with one condition: As long as we dont burn down the school, it should be good for the school!
