Despite the fact that Cincinnati is way off Broadway, it has a very prominent theater scene. Auditions are everywhere and there are always shows going on every weekend. There is just about everything in terms of theater.
Want a chance to see a more well-known musical? Check out Footloose, October 6 through October 22, at The Foolighters Inc. This show is up-tempo and has a great vibe reminiscent of the jammin 80s. For only $20, this is a chance to see a great production. The Footlighters Inc. is a community theater in Newport, Kentucky. If cutting footloose is not your thing, check out their other shows this season: Rent and The Light in the Piazza. If you want to get a more hands-on experience you can even volunteer to be on-stage or backstage.
If thou dost prefer something more traditional, you are in for a real treat; one of Shakespeares most famous comedies, As You Like It, will be performed at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park from October 4 through November 6. The show costs $25-$71, so its a real bargain for great theater. As far as quality goes, this theater is one of the best in the city, even regionally, it raises the bar. As a two-time Tony Award winner, the theater performs over ten shows a season. Merrily We Roll Along, Thunder Knocking on the Door, and The Second City 2 are only a few of this years season.
The most awaited show by far is CCDSs own Rumors, a fantastically funny farce by Neil Simon. For $10, you can see your fellow students playing ridiculous characters, dancing to La Bamba, and tripping over telephone chords. The show runs October 20-22. Rumors is sure to be hilarious.
If you want more information about theater in the area or reviews of what’s been going on,
read up on Jackie Demaline, a prominent theater critic and arts reporter for The Cincinnati Enquirer. She talks about some of the productions around town online and every Sunday.
