Across the country and around the world, Cincinnati Country Day students tasted various versions of the irresistible treat. Put down your books, sit back, and read on for tales of students’ encounters with this delectable dessert!

The French are known for their sumptuous cuisine, but is their ice cream up to par? Hailey Connor, ’14, who visited France this summer, said the best ice cream she had all summer was “in France… [at] this little café like two minutes from my house, they just had this black raspberry chip ice cream, so I tried it, it was the most delicious thing on the face of the planet.” Why was it so good? Connor dreamily said, “it was really creamy, it was sweet… it just tasted like it was made with… all these fresh ingredients.”

Martha Lamotte ’13 said the best ice cream she had this summer was “Tiramisu from Miotto, an Italian ice cream [parlor] in Germany.” She should know her German desserts, as she hails from the land of the creme puff.

Lamotte said, “I love the American vanilla ice cream, but I don’t like the German vanilla ice cream at all… there’s a huge difference… it’s just better, I have no idea why.” Lamotte also enjoyed Graeters’ Blueberry Pie, Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked, complete with brownie chunks and cookie dough. How does German ice cream differ from its American counterpart? Lamotte claims that German ice cream is “less creamy.”

Caroline Gentile ’13 had gelato in France and Italy this summer. She said “they were both really light and refreshing and came in tons of different flavors.”

Gentile also went to Moomers in Traverse City, Michigan, where “you can watch them make their ice cream.” This is one place where you’ll get your money’s worth: “One sundae, the Holy Cow, has 10 scoops of ice-cream, 5 brownies, 3 bananas and an entire can of whipped cream. Once, my family ordered it, and I’m proud to say we almost finished it,” said Gentile. “The only bad thing [about Moomers] is that the line is always out the door.”

Ari Knue ’12 also enjoyed gelato in Italy this summer! She said she had the best ice cream at “a gelateria… the best flavor was Straciateli… its like chocolate chip and its so good!” Knue added that “Nutella

was awesome [too], but by far Graeters’ seasonal flavor Strawberry Chocolate Chip is my favorite ice cream ever.”

Haleigh Miller ’12 was in Saratoga Springs, New York for five weeks. She discovered a frozen yogurt hot-spot called Plum Dandy, but said “Graeters is definitely my favorite, I’m a Cincinnati girl, born and raised.”

Yichen Dong ’12 an international student at CCD from China, said that Chinese ice cream is “not really different from American.”

While some students enjoyed more exotic ice creams, most seem to have preferred Graeters: Kierstan Bannerman ’14 said, “The best ice cream I had all summer was probably Raspberry Chocolate Chip from Graeters [because] there were huge chocolate chips in it.”

Although Michael Barton ’13 had “mint chocolate chip at Kulwins’ in Boyne City, Michigan,” he said that the best ice cream he had this summer was “definitely mint chocolate chip from Graeters.” After all, as he said, “Even Forbes ranks it the number one ice cream in the country.”
