Sisters Elizabeth ’11 and Caroline Blackburn ’13 (pictured) are giving a new meaning to the term “sibling rivalry” as they flatten the competition on their way to state in girls tennis doubles. As they compete against opposing doubles teams, they push each other to get better. The duo started off strong on Thursday, October 7th, as they took sectionals by storm. The Blackburn sisters defeated Chaminade Julienne 6-1, 6-3 and qualified for districts. Elizabeth and Caroline were slated against tournament favorite Seven Hills, but 6-1 and 6-3 seemed to be lucky numbers for the Blackburns, as they came away with another victory, qualifying them for a trip to the state tournament.
On Saturday, October 16, Elizabeth and Caroline played for seeding in the state tournament. In their first match, they triumphed, defeating Oakwood by a score of 6-3. 6-1. They then suffered their first defeat of the postseason at the hands of CHCA, who, last year, was ranked third in the state. However, the loss won’t set them back too far in terms of seeding. They are ranked second in their division going into the first round of State, which will be played at Ohio State University on the morning of Friday, October 22nd.
The Blackburn sisters join the men’s varsity golf team as participants in Ohio state tournaments for the 2010 fall season. Elliot Cofer ’13 says of the school’s recent athletic success that, “Having the tennis and golf players at the state tournament is pretty solid for the CCDS athletic community.” The Blackburn sisters are hoping to continue their thus far stellar season and make a deep run into the state tournament.
