Although CCDS football and soccer games are quite exciting events in themselves, this fall, halftime will be a lot less entertaining for spectators. Due to a lack of participation this season, there will be no dance team to support and cheer on other Upper School athletes. However, the future for the dance team is auspicious; Coach Tracey Suekoff and interested participants have recently met to talk about their plans for the winter season and are very excited for the 2010-2011 team.
The dance team’s inability to field a team in the fall is not an issue of lack of interest, but rather “it is that some of the athletes desire to participate in another fall sport.” said Suekoff. She added that “Students should exercise their right to explore other activities.” Also, there are a few misconceptions about the dance team causing some people not to sign up when they might be interested. For example, students who participate on the team do receive a full sports credit. Suekoff explained that one “does not need to be an expert dancer, choreographer, or fit a certain body type. Diversity is always present in the CCDS dance team.” Jenny March ’13, who participated in some of the dance team’s performances last year, liked having the option to be given a sports credit for dancing. “I love to dance,” she said, “and just being able to do it was great.” Molly Petre ’13, concurred, saying that “[dance team] is a lot of fun and a great opportunity to perform.”
As for the winter season, the goals of the team are “to have strong and confident athletes, from freshmen to seniors,” said Suekoff. “There is nothing more rewarding as a coach to see the girls feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment from the work they have done.”
