Frisbee has become a new sensation at CCDS, and as spring approaches, enthusiasm for it continues to grow. What started as a few senior boys playing Frisbee at lunch has turned into a CCDS phenomenon. Within a few weeks of the start of the 2009-2010 school year, between 15 and 20 boys were playing pickup games every day. As the games became more competitive, and the number of participants grew, Frisbee Club heads Alex Toltzis, ’10, Matt Lesser, ’10, and Nick Brown, ’10, realized that the Frisbee team they had always joked about starting had actually become a real possibility. Plans for a CCDS club Frisbee team have been put in place, but Toltzis said, “If it can be organized, I would fully be in support of it as a varsity sport.”
The team has scheduled exhibition matches against teams such as Clark, Turpin, Anderson, and Walnut Hills. Toltzis has very high expectations for the team. “We should to be able to compete with the best teams in the city,” he said.
There is certainly adequate talent at CCDS for the squad, which comprises multiple students from all four grades, to be successful. Toltzis is clearly the best player, as he has superior skills in throwing, catching, and defense. Brown is a viable downfield target for Toltzis, and juniors Robert Pierce, Grant Hesser, and George Drew, among others, are very solid overall players. Junior Michael Fitzgerald exhibits unmatched enthusiasm and hustle (earning him the nickname Superbowl Fitzy) and is the best defensive player at CCDS.
Many of CCDS’s opponents require that two girls be on the field at all times. Fortunately, according to Toltzis, seniors Xanni Brown, Corey Tipton, and Lisa Racine and sophomore Jo Jeelani have shown interest. However, the team needs more girls to participate, and Toltzis said, “All girls who are interested are welcome to play.”
Games will be played on Sundays, and practices will take place during lunchtime and possibly after school, but Toltzis emphasized, “We don’t by any means expect everyone to attend every practice, because it is Ultimate Frisbee. It’s simply for fun.”
