For Valentine’s Day, the San Antonio Zoo does something special for everyone who has a grudge against their ex or someone who has wronged them. The Cry Me a Cockroach Fundraiser is an opportunity for people to send in names for cockroaches, rats, or even vegetables, that will then be fed to one of the animals in the Zoo. According to the San Antonio Zoo, this fundraiser helps with their “mission of securing a future for wildlife” and they will use the money for bettering the zoo and creating a safe and healthy environment for their animals.
The fun side of this fundraiser comes from the various messages you can get to send to others. For no extra cost, the San Antonio Zoo will send a digital Valentine’s Day card to the person the food is named after. For $150, an extremely large donation, you can get a personalized video of your food being eaten by one of the many animals there. So far this year, the most popular names have been Zach, Ray, and Adam.
While, personally, I think this is a strange and funny fundraiser, it really does a lot to help out the San Antonio Zoo. Just last year they received more than 8,000 donations from all 50 states and even from over 30 different countries. While you have to be at least 18 to submit a name, I think this is such a great idea for a zoo fundraiser, as they are making money off of simply feeding the zoo animals.
