Ask anyone this question and they’ll tell you something along the lines of “Oh, Megan rapped ‘these – don’t be mad at Megan, these – mad at Megan’s Law,’ and Nicki thought it was directed towards her and her husband.” While this is true, it isn’t the whole story.
This line comes from a song of Megan’s called “Hiss,” which was released on January 26th of this year. This song fires shots at several unnamed targets, but connections are being made by fans to Drake and Pardison Fontaine, a rapper ex-boyfriend. The above lyric, however, is what turned heads. It refers to Megan’s Law, a federal law stating that information on charges against registered sex offenders must be publicized, which hit a nerve with Minaj.
Kenneth “Zoo” Petty, Minaj’s husband, is a level two registered sex offender in New York. He was accused of raping a 16-year-old girl in 1995 and spent four years behind bars. Minaj reacted almost immediately with a counterattack, releasing “Big Foot” a mere two days later. “Big Foot” is a blatant diss track, although Minaj criticized those who called it that on X (formerly Twitter). In the track, Minaj takes venomous jabs at Megan. She references her grooming allegations, her alleged use of ghostwriters, her late mother, and more. She dragged Thee Stallion on X, not giving her a chance to breathe, leaving posts calling her a “disgusting serpent” and a “pathological and manipulative liar” at every turn. She claims Megan is “using ghostwriters and still SUCK[S].”
Looking a few years into the past, the relationship between the two rappers hasn’t always been sour. Their rollercoaster began in August 2019, when they worked with each other and Ty Dolla $ign to create “Hot Girl Summer,” which hit #11 on the Hot 100. On an Instagram Live, Megan and Minaj gushed about their admiration for each other, Megan even revealing that she’d been a “Barb” since 2008. Some say that the ill-will began when Thee Stallion joined forces with Cardi B in August 2020 when making the song “WAP,” but Megan confirmed in November 2020 that the relationship between her and Nicki remained unchanged.
Not even two months later, Minaj unfollowed Thee Stallion on Instagram.
Back to the present day, fans went berserk after Minaj added on X, “told me to drink & go to the clinic if I was pregnant,” referencing Megan’s allegations of forcing Minaj to drink while she was trying to get pregnant and simply suggesting she gets an abortion if she does turn out to be pregnant. Megan responded to the accusation with a simple “LIE.” “All b/c I wouldn’t let your funky butt pour liquor down my throat?” Minaj continues.
In “Big Foot,” Minaj raps, “The – fell off, I said ‘Get up on your good foot.” This references an incident in July of 2020 when rapper Tory Lanez shot her in the foot as they were leaving a party. She also devalues Megan’s numerous Grammy Awards with the line, “They got you all them Grammys, but your flow’s still a no.”
“Hiss” slithered to the #1 spot on the Hot 100 on February 5. This accomplishment makes Megan one of only two female rappers to boast two songs atop this list. The other? Nicki Minaj. “Big Foot” stomped to the #5 spot on the Hot 100.
Not long after, a heated debate broke out between the Minaj’s fans and Thee Stallion’s fans across social media over who won what people are calling “round one” of a feud that, by the looks of it, isn’t going away anytime soon.
