Christmas is a well-known, deeply loved holiday that many hold close to their hearts. Characterized by gift-giving, Christmas dinner, and festive decorations, the holiday is a special time for most. While it isn’t a formal holiday in all countries, Christmas is celebrated worldwide. One tradition shared across the globe is gift-giving, so let’s take a look at some of the most popular gifts in different countries.
USA
85% of people celebrate Christmas in the US, so it’s safe to say it’s one of the most popular holidays here. It’s a widespread practice to decorate a Christmas tree, hang stockings, wrap and give gifts, have a large Christmas dinner, and spend time with family and friends. The most frequent gift by far is a gift card, runners-up including clothing, makeup and skincare products, and shoes.
India
In India, the most common gifts for Christmas include traditional Indian sweets, clothes (traditional or not), jewelry, and money. Gifts are especially symbolic in India as they go much beyond a material formality. In Indian culture, gifts are given often as they represent the bond between the giver and the receiver.
France
In France, it is a common tradition for children to leave their shoes by the fireplace. Santa comes in the night to fill their shoes with nuts, fruit, and small trinkets. The gifts children find under the tree include books, board games, and gift cards.
Spain
In Spain, almost everyone believes that Christmas is becoming too commercialized and should be refucsed towards gratitude and quality time with family and friends. Those who do give gifts, though, give standard utilities and practical gifts for Christmas. This commonly comes in the form of basic daily essentials.
China
In China, the most customary gift to give is money in a red envelope. Caution needs to be taken though, because different numbers have very specific meanings in Chinese culture. For example, increments of 4 could be taken as offensive in some regions, but would be acceptable in others. Even numbers, such as 200, 600, and 800 (avoid 400), are considered polite. Increments of 8 are ideal because the number 8 is considered to be lucky
Brazil
Brazil is another country that enjoys the celebration of Christmas, and they also participate in gift-giving. The most routine gifts to find include clothes, shoes, and makeup.
Additionally, chocolate is a widely appreciated gift, usually in the form of a truffle as opposed to a chocolate bar.
