Films of the Summer: Barbie vs. Oppenheimer
May 12, 2023
I can only imagine some of you read the title and thought: what on earth is she talking about? I would be thinking the same thing. However, if you are a huge film fanatic like myself, you will know that there are two incredibly anticipated films dropping in the summer of 2023. Those films are Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023), and Christophers Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023). Two incredibly well know names in the industry, and I am certain if you were to recognize any director’s name, it is most likely going to be Christopher Nolan. Personally, I am definitely most excited for Nolan’s Oppenheimer; however, many people have had a hard time deciding which film to watch first due to the fact they are both being released on the same day, July 21st.
Barbie (2023)
Now you may be wondering why there is so much attention revolving around this Barbie film. Typically, when you think of Barbie, you think of the animated cartoons aimed at young girls between the ages of 3-9 years old. However, this is unlike those that you have in mind. This is a live-action Barbie film that fits the genre of comedy/fantasy with some minor hints of mystery, which is suggested to play out similarly to the iconic film ‘The Truman Show’.
The most notable thing about the film so far is definitely the cast. Marketing through the use of star power definitely attracted eyes to the project as we see big names on the cast lists, such as: Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Michael Cera, Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, and Simu Liu.
So far, judging on the film’s released trailer, it will be an extravagant film with amazing CGI, sets, and soundtracks.
Oppenheimer (2023)
There is still very little information about this film that has been released, regardless of it being released in less than 2 months’ time. However, from what we know so far, we can only assume it is going to be a cinematic masterpiece, following the same legacy as the remainder of Christopher Nolan’s films. It will follow physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer’s journey working with groups of scientists to develop the atomic bomb. Of course, Christopher Nolan is not the biggest fan of CGI, which you can see in the lack of CGI in certain scenes from Nolan’s Inception, so he definitely went a big out for the scene in which the Atomic bomb was dropped. Supposedly for that scene, he did not use any CGI, and I would be lying if I said I knew entirely how he is going to manage to depict a bomb, without CGI, and without any consequences.
This is definitely going to be an incredible film to watch and like Barbie (2023), has an amazing cast, with the most recognizable names being Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr, Rami Malek, and Florence Pugh.
Both films are most certainly going to be unique, however, the big conflict now is which film people are going to watch first
