This past weekend, three CCDS students appeared in Closer than Ever, a musical revue, with the Cincinnati Actors Studio. With lyrics by Richard Maltby Jr. and music by David Shire, this show delivers. Alyssa Magarian, ’10, Ali Brenemen, ’11, and Catherine Smith, ’12, performed with eight other actors in the show, which explores the emotions and difficulties of romance and relationships. The show has no dialogue, only songs, which cover topics such as unrequited love, marriage, and infidelity. According to Magarian, “The show has so much to offer and so do the performers.” After seeing the show, I completely agree. The acting and singing are amazing, and the songs range from the hilarious to the thought-provoking. The audience sits on couches and at tables close to the stage, creating an intimate setting that allows the actors to better connect with the audience. Overall, I enjoyed the show and recommend it to all fans of musical theater. Closer than Ever will be showing again Oct. 22, 23, and 24 at 7:30 pm. Admission is “pay what you can”, with the money going to an actor who was recently diagnosed with cancer.
