Dr. Marygrace Tyrrell is a new teacher in the Upper School. She will be teaching AP United States History (APUSH), Honors Economics, and two spring senior electives.
Dr. Tyrrell is very eager to teach students at Cincinnati Country Day because she has always wanted to be a teacher. As Dr. Tyrrell explains, “You can tell a lot about what someone will do when they grow up by what they played as a child. I played school.” Growing up, one of Dr. Tyrrell’s favorite gifts was an official green grade book. Though this isn’t a typical gift, it demonstrates Dr. Tyrrell’s passion for teaching others. In addition to teaching, Dr. Tyrrell enjoys learning history. She remembers reading and looking at the pictures in her older sister’s high school textbook when she was in kindergarten. Dr. Tyrrell is excited to teach history because “History is all about great stories and who does not love a great story?”
Before joining the Cincinnati Country Day faculty, Dr. Tyrrell previously taught at Northwestern University and Dominican University. She grew up in St. Louis and moved to Cincinnati two years ago with her family. When she is not teaching, Dr. Tyrrell enjoys spending time with her children. Dr. Tyrrell wants to teach at Cincinnati Country Day because it will allow her to put her experience teaching at the college level to use for high school students. She is excited to contribute “a new voice to the History Department and teach courses that [she is] really passionate about.”
As an APUSH teacher, Dr. Tyrrell wants her students to have fun mastering a lot of material. She also wants her Economics students to learn how to think critically about real-life problems that they may face in the near future. When asked for her advice for students, Dr. Tyrrell says that she understands junior and senior years can be stressful. As Dr. Tyrrell explains, “I want my students to know that I am a reasonable person with the big picture in mind. If they are ever feeling overwhelmed, they should come talk to me.”
