Walking down the halls of the Lower School is like walking down memory lane for an Upper School student. Each teacher brings back old memories. What I remember about Second Grade Teacher Shana Morarity is hearing her calming voice and seeing her comforting smile.
Mrs. Morarity has worked as a second grade lead teacher for nine years, and prior to that she was a collaborative first grade teacher for three years. Mrs. Morarity’s favorite part of teaching is that each day is different. She also loves how every student is very inquisitive and brings new interests to the table. One of her favorite memories of teaching at Country Day was that one year the students had the opportunity to witness the metamorphosis of a monarch caterpillar into a chrysalis. When asked about advice she’d like to give to her former students, Mrs. Morarity replied, “Remain curious, always ask questions, and count your blessings.”
“It’s a good thing for the students because there’s now a lot of interesting changes going on campus-wide. The campus has become more integrated with the other divisions. Sometimes it becomes a disadvantage in that it is harder to get all the necessary academics done. It is kind of like the Catch-22 of life: Where there’s greater experiences, but it makes accomplishing everything that needs to be done harder to do.” If Mrs. Morarity could teach any other grade, she said she would want to teach 3rd grade because she loves cross-curriculum teaching, and the third graders are at a stage where they have more opportunities to bring all of the subjects together.
Once Mr. and Mrs. Morarity sell their home in Cincinnati, they are planning to move to Seattle where she hopes to teach. The Moraritys also have property in Utah, so they will be staying there too. We will miss Mrs. Morarity. Thank you, Mrs. Morarity, for your hard work and best of luck in the future.
