This past week the Country Day varsity swim team competed in MVC/SOSL League Championship swim meet, hosted at Country Day. Both the girls and the boys had a great meet. The girl’s team finished first overall and the boy’s team finished second overall. The girl’s team looked strong throughout the meet. Allie Wooden ’15, had another strong meet for the Indians. She was able to win all of her races while breaking the longest standing Country Day girl’s swim record for the 100 yard butterfly record by swimming a 58.39. This was the final record that Wooden needed to break in order to have her name on every single swim record for Country Day.
The boy’s team had an amazing meet as well. They were able to finish in second place behind a very strong Seven Hills swim team. Going into the meet, the team knew that it was going to be tough to beat the Seven Hills swim team, but they gave it their all. The boys were able to finish in the top three places in the relays by finishing in third place for the 200 yard medley relay, second in the 200 yard free relay, and second in the 400 yard free relay.
Coach Westhoven said about the meet, “I think Country Day had a very strong showing in the MVC Championship. Everyone swam well, dropped times, and the energy our team had was palpable. Overall, the boy’s team took second place out of seven teams. Some standout races were Mickey Masterson [‘17] competing in the 100 fly for the first time, Alexander Maier [’15] dropping significant time off the 50 and 100 free. Taylor Maier [’15] shaving time off the 100 backstroke (fourth overall), John Pettengill [‘18] taking third in breaststroke, [freshmen] Thomas Mactaggart and Derek Stevens taking top 10 in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, and Charlie Sachs [’17] with a personal record this season in the 200 free relay. The girls took first place overall out of seven teams, and looked impressive in the water. Standouts include but aren’t limited to, Holly Jacobs [’17] and Celia Macrae [’15] taking first and second place consecutively in the 100 freestyle, Sophie Hudson [’17] held strong with a second place finish in the 200 free, Kira Hughes [’15] placing fourth in Breaststroke, with a personal record, Allie Wooden [‘15] first in 100 fly with a new school record, Taylor Boggs [‘16] dropping significant time in the 100 breaststroke, and Skylar Boggs [‘18] with a new personal record in the 50 free. Both teams showed great support for each other and were by far the loudest when it came to cheering on their teammates. That was probably my favorite part of Saturday—seeing our teams come together with so much spirit!”
The Country Day swim teams move on to Sectionals at Mason on Friday evening, February 13 for the boys and Saturday afternoon, February 14 for the girls, in hopes of advancing to the District swim meet at Miami University on Friday, February 20 to qualify for State.
