A couple weeks ago, on Saturday, November 8, eight Country Day mathletes traveled to Lakota West High School to compete in the Rose-Hulman Math Competition. Seniors Stephen Liao, Pranav Madabhushi, and Akshay Sonti, junior Monica Ma, and freshmen Max Delbello, Tony Wen, Moya Ly, and Lorae Stojanovic took time out of their weekends to take an hour-long test consisting of twenty questions of increasing difficulty. The Country Day participants had a very strong showing with five of the eight students placing in the top ten of their respective sections (each section is determined by grade level and gender).
The freshmen performed especially well. Out of 24 freshmen males, Wen placed fifth, while Ly and Stojanovic placed eighth and first respectively of the 15 freshmen females. Two other Country Day students placed in the top ten of their sections as well: Ma was fifth out of 25 junior females and Liao was tenth out of 31 senior males.
Not only did students place well in their sections, two of the freshmen also placed overall. Out of 176 total participants, Wen and Stojanovic came in 15th and 29th respectively. This is especially impressive considering they scored better than many sophomores, juniors, and even seniors as freshmen. Madabhushi, co-president of Math Club, commented, “As a senior, it’s always great to see the plethora of young talent.”
As the year continues, the Country Day Math Club hopes to not only participate in many other competitions but also perform as well as and even better than it did at its latest competition. Madabhushi further added, “Math Club has evolved into a large, intellectual family, and Rose-Hulman just attests to that fact. Moving forward we hope for continued success and a great year.”
