When I picked up the small, bright yellow book for the first time, the thought of it being an epic tale of school adventures never crossed my mind. Taylor handed me the book, I smiled and gave the typical thank you, but I was really thinking, “What is this? Is this a comic book? The last time I read one of these, I was twelve.” I did not expect to be sucked into the gripping plot and become attached to the multi-faceted and complex characters. In this heroic tale, Lunch Lady returns to her school to defeat a tyrannical and maniacal superintendent and in response the students and school staff (not including the teachers) make an unexpected alliance to kick some major butt. The many food-related puns and wisecracks from the sassy Lunch Lady provide comic relief to this otherwise thrilling and action-packed story. My favorite character was definitely Milmoe; his resemblance to a younger Mr. Milmoe, Althetic Director, was uncanny and hilarious. I won’t spoil the ending, but I will say that it was predictable yet still decent. The comic as a whole was entertaining, and the illustrations were very comical. I hope that I can read the other installments of this comic series and dive into other adventures that Lunch Lady and her heroic companions have been a part of. If you are looking for a quick and entertaining read with witty language and a clever plot, then you should definitely consider reading the Lunch Lady comics (you should also read them if you desire to see Mr. Milmoe star as a bully and school hero).
