Consistent with their reputations, this was another amazing year for the Country Day track teams. Both had strong showings and displayed great improvement throughout the regular season, and are continuing this trend during the post-season, all the way up to the regional and state championships.
The girls’ team has only increased in strength this year, as it gained the increased skill of team members from years past, as well as a strong crop of freshman runners. As Sydney Menifee ’14, one of the team captains, explained, “It was great to watch a lot of young girls come out and run! It showed a lot of character when they were asked to do events they’ve never done before, and didn’t complain.” The team won the League and District titles, victories that were followed by more amazing performances at the Regional Championships. The team ended up advancing to the Regional Championships in ten events where the relay team made up of Sydney and Shelley Menifee ’14, Kaitlin Harden ’15, and Lauren Buczek ’16 won the 4×100 relay to take home the Regional Championship, and will continue on to the State Championships. In addition to this, Shelley Menifee also advanced to State in the 100 meter dash, in which she placed third, and in the 300 meter hurdles, a specialty of hers, in which she placed second.
The boys’ team may have lost some fantastic runners after last season, but they have come back as strong as ever. Taking third place in the league and second in the district, the team has proven that it is quite capable of producing talented and powerful athletes. Through the performances of many athletes, such as league champions Mantero Moreno-Cheek ’15 and Cooper Ebersbach ’16 in the shot put and discus, and 800, respectively, and 4×100 district champions Lucas Mairal-Cruz ’14, Carter McMaster ’14, Darryn Jordan ‘16, and Nick Sam ’16, the team demonstrated its prowess both on the track and on the field. The team competed in ten events at the regional competition, where Jordan finished third in the 100 meter dash, qualifying for the State Championships.
State Championships take place at Ohio State University on June 6 and 7.
