The CCDS Varsity Tennis Team had fantastic start. They had a record of 5 wins and 2 losses (both against Louisville St. X). Only one Senior departed the team last year. The team had added two new and talented freshmen Vishaal Nalagatla’17 and JJ Wolf’17. The team was led by captain and senior Patrick Wildman. A couple of weekends ago, the team participated in the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Coaches Association tournament. CCDS proved to be a tough competitor against strong Division 1 teams like Mason and Sycamore. Patrick and JJ won their singles matches, each with strong starts in the tournament. Patrick beat Sycamore’s Nakul Narandran in straight sets, 6-2 6-4. JJ defeated Mason’s number 2 seed, Young-Jin Kang with ease, beating him 6-1 6-0. Although Asher Hirsch lost to Mason’s Luke Tsai 6-2 7-5, he didn’t go down without a fight. Patrick ’14 said, “the team played well but we were disappointed with a third place finish.” With State looming, the team pushed through tough practices and prepped for matches against Ohio’s best players.
At State, CCDS dominated. Asher Hirsch was the Singles State Champion, with JJ Wolf as runner-up. Kevin Yu and Patrick Wildman clinched the Doubles State Championship, with a nail-biting finals match, and the team won the State Championship as a whole.
